Although the United Nations remains heavily criticised for its complexity and bias towards the ‘big 5’ nations, it’s noble origins and ideals – embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – emphasises the need for a more democratic, more powerful and ultimately more representative UN system which can act as a democratic conduit for international cooperation and the securing of basic human needs.

Human Rights Day: Making the declaration truly universal

A year-long campaign will be launched today to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which falls on Dec 10, 2008. This campaign will engage the whole UN system in promoting the declaration's ideals and principles of justice and equality for all of us which changed the landscape of international relations and gave substance to the aspirations of freedom and dignity of humankind.
