AFRICOM: Round One in a New Cold War?

Africa - oil fields22nd September 07 - Christopher Moraff, In These Times

The forgotten continent of Africa could become the new battleground in the next American conflict.

On Feb. 6, President Bush formally established the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), a unified command structure located on the continent. By 2012, the United States wants two dozen bases in Africa to promote U.S. security interests and “the common goals of development of health, education, democracy, and economic growth.”

The So-Called “War on Terror:”: A Masterpiece of Propaganda

Bush12th September 07, Richard W. Behan, Atlantic Free Press

From its first days in office in January of 2001 the Administration of George W. Bush meant to launch military attacks against both Afghanistan and Iraq. The reasons had nothing to do with terrorism. This is beyond dispute. The mainstream press has either ignored the story or missed it completely, but the Administration’s congenital belligerence is fully documented elsewhere. Attacking a sovereign nation unprovoked, however, directly violates the charter of the United Nations. It is an international crime. The Bush Administration would need credible justification to proceed with its plans.

Two Big Skeletons in Petraeus’s Closet

General Petraeus10th September 07 - Patrick Cockburn, CounterPunch.org

General David Petraeus, the commander of US forces in Iraq, has always shown exceptional skill in impressing American politicians and journalists with his military abilities. Today he will be listened to with immense respect in Congress as he reports on how far the "surge" – the increase in the number of US troops in Iraq by 30,000 – has positively affected the war in Iraq.

Hurricane Katrina and War—what Is the Connection?

Katrina disaster: woman in American flag8th September 07 - Prof. Ismael Hossein-zadeh, Global Research

On the face of it, there is no connection between Katrina’s tragic devastation of New Orleans and the recent U.S. wars of choice. It can be shown, however, that the death and destruction wrought by Katrina have been (at least in part) a submerged or invisible part of the enormous costs of the escalating war and military spending.

The huge costs of Katrina, in terms of both blood and treasure, can be called opportunity costs of war and military spending: When a disproportionately large share of public or national resources are diverted to war and militarism, the opportunity of maintaining or upgrading public infrastructure is lost and the citizens, especially the poor and working people, are made more vulnerable in the face of natural disasters.

The Origins of the Cold War: A Second Look

Bush and Putin5th September 07 - Dr. Everett Thiele, Global Research

Starting with the unilateral rejection of the ABM treaty, the current Bush Administration has taken a number of aggressive steps toward Russia. The resulting increase in tensions with Russia has caused some commentators to speak of a new Cold War. Clearly, the U.S. bears the major share of responsibility for this current situation. But, what about the “first” Cold War? How responsible was the U.S. for its origin?.

An Important Marker Has Been Passed

John Pilger25th August 07 - John Pilger, New Statesman

Those calling for a boycott of Israel were once distant voices. Now the discussion has gone global. It is growing inexorably and will not be silenced.

From a limestone hill rising above Qalandia refugee camp you can see Jerusalem. I watched a lone figure standing there in the rain, his son holding the tail of his long tattered coat. He extended his hand and did not let go.

Iraq: the Unavoidable Global Trauma

Iraq - US soldiers in battle23rd August 07 - Pablo Ouziel, Middle East Online

Many decades ago in Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler stated the following; "I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator." By now we have all had a chance to evaluate the consequences of that "will."

In 2003 an article by the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, quoted a Palestinian leader claiming Bush said to him; “God told me to strike at Al-Qaeda. And I struck them. And then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did. And now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East.”
